Certification for the GCC markets

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the other Gulf states share the G-Mark and halal, and run their own SASO, SABER and ECAS on top. How the layers fit together.

Entering the GCC means clearing two filters at once. Halal is the religious filter and opens the market; SASO, ESMA, MOIAT and the G-Mark are the technical filter and make the product legal. Customs checks both, and neither substitutes for the other. Some of the technical layer is shared, the G-Mark type approval covers all seven GSO states, and some is national: SABER and SASO in Saudi Arabia, ECAS and EQM in the UAE, with the SFDA and MOHAP for food, cosmetics and health products.

The schemes differ procedurally and test the same things. For electrical goods that is electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, energy efficiency and restricted substances, so a manufacturer with IEC and RoHS reports from an accredited laboratory has most of the file already. What is added locally is energy labelling, the SASO label in Saudi Arabia for example, recycling obligations, testing in a GCC laboratory where the scheme requires it, and documentation in English and Arabic. Household appliances go through all five at once.

The articles below cover halal alongside kosher and national norms, Gulf appliances, toys under the G-Mark, marketplaces in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and electrical compliance across MENA. Timelines run from days for a SABER shipment certificate to ten weeks for a G-Mark with new testing. Send the product and the destination states and we will lay out the layers in order.

Frequently asked questions

Is one certificate valid across all GCC countries?

The G-Mark type approval is, for the products it covers. Halal certificates from recognised bodies are accepted across the region. National schemes are not shared: a SABER certificate is Saudi, an ECAS certificate is Emirati, and a product sold in both needs both.

Do we need halal for a non-food product?

If it contains animal-derived ingredients, yes. Gelatin capsules, dairy in a supplement and animal proteins in cosmetics all bring halal in, and customs in the UAE and Saudi Arabia will hold the consignment without it.
