INMETRO is the Brazilian regulator whose certification lets industrial, electrical and laboratory equipment be sold in the country at all. The route has five steps: the technical file, the local representative, testing in an accredited Brazilian laboratory, a factory audit and the certificate. It runs three to six months including the audit. The certificate is valid for two to three years with maintenance in between, and a certificate whose maintenance lapses is suspended and then cancelled. For German and Italian equipment makers it is also what opens public tenders.
Two things decide whether a project runs to that timeline. The first is scope: INMETRO handles equipment and ANVISA handles cosmetics and health products, and asking INMETRO to certify a product that belongs to ANVISA is the most common first wrong turn. The second is explosion protection. Brazil’s oil, gas and mining sectors run on Ex equipment, INMETRO governs it through documents called Portarias, and IECEx certification gives presumption of conformity while EN and ATEX standards and older IEC editions require a gap assessment before testing is planned.
Anything with a wireless function adds Anatel certification on top, tested in Brazilian laboratories regardless of CE or FCC marks. Three to six months including the audit, for equipment under one regime. The laboratory tests and the factory audit are the long items, and a product that also needs Anatel runs the two in parallel where it can. Certificates are valid for two to three years with maintenance.
Is IECEx accepted for Ex equipment in Brazil?
IECEx certification gives presumption of conformity under the INMETRO Portarias, which shortens testing considerably. ATEX and EN-based files do not; they go through a gap assessment against the Brazilian requirements first, and the assessment decides what is re-tested.
