Common Problems in Electrical Safety Certification

Four problems account for most stalled electrical safety projects: not knowing which requirements apply, incomplete or incorrect documentation, budgets set before the testing scope is known, and logistics, samples that arrive late, or in packaging that fails.
Problem 1: not knowing which requirements apply
The most common obstacle is a manufacturer lacking a clear picture of the requirements that apply to its product.
Different countries and regions have their own standards and regulations for electrical safety. In the UAE there are several certifications, G-Mark, ECAS and others, and which applies depends on the product type.
The fix. Analyse the target country’s requirements in detail before starting. An expert assessment at that point is cheap relative to what it prevents, and it replaces an assumption with a scope of work.
Problem 2: documentation
Certification requires a substantial volume of documentation: technical specifications, test reports, supporting material. Incorrectly completed or missing documents lead to delays or outright rejection.
The fix. Have the documents reviewed and prepared before submission. This is the intervention with the best ratio of effort to time saved, because a rejected file restarts the queue.
Problem 3: cost
Certification can require significant financial investment, particularly where additional testing is needed to meet international standards. Testing fees are high and international testing may be unavoidable.
The fix. Plan the budget at the project preparation stage. An expert assessment ordered up front estimates the potential costs in advance and makes the process transparent, which is what allows a go/no-go decision to be made before money is committed.
Problem 4: logistics
Logistical issues obstruct more projects than most people expect: delays shipping samples for testing, and problems selecting appropriate packaging for transportation.
The fix. Treat sample logistics as part of the certification plan rather than as a shipping task that follows it. Packaging that protects the sample and satisfies the destination’s import requirements has to be decided before the sample is dispatched.
